Liberals and economics

A great comment on Matthew Yglesias’ recent post about water pricing sums up how I’m starting to feel:

Liberals’ approach to some economic issues is not unlike conservatives’ approach to evolution.

As per water pricing itself, I’m not really up on the ins and outs of water issues, but it seems to me that it’s like gas. If you want people to use less of it, you’re better off pricing it higher than trying to hector everybody with a public education campaign. If you did that you’d certainly need to subsidize poor people so they don’t pay any more for their day-to-day water. But I think those administration costs would be preferable to some central government agency subsidizing golf courses and private swimming pools.
